Explore the heart of Filoti in the Fasolas neighborhood through the eyes of Petros, a local shepherd and farmer in September of 1974. The older of two brothers, Petros took over the farm after his father died and his younger brother emigrated to Canada. He is engaged to be married to his childhood friend Katerina and his future mother-in-law has it all planned out. Until in the course of only one day it all falls apart. Meet Petros’ family, neighbours and friends and discover how one day changed his life forever.
The 70s brought many changes to the Greek islands, and Naxos in particular. The economic crisis gripping Greece at the time forced many young people to leave their villages, moving to Athens or emigrating abroad in search of new opportunities and a more modern lifestyle. Meanwhile, the ones who stayed behind struggled with financial difficulties and lack of resources. Tensions grew between tradition and progress, the old and the new, shaping the lives of the locals as they tried to balance their tradition and heritage with the changing times.

The hike passes through the historic Fasolas neighborhood with a barber shop, tailor, metal and wood workshop lovingly restored to their original state in the 70ies. The shops are opened 11-15h everyday but to on the safe side be sure to call the museum (+30 694 439 4689), as the restored shops may not always be open during midday or in the offseason. Mr. Moustakis is always happy to open the shops for visitors.
The hike circles through Filoti, touching on its most important places, then returns to circle through an alternative route once more to create a familiarity that should in the end feel almost like you live there. The path includes an ascent of ca. 10 minutes to a viewpoint overlooking the village and so maybe avoid coming in the midday heat.
