When a Turkish merchant ship crashed in 1690 in the bay of Kalandos, only five sailors and a boy survived. He was only 12 years old. Heavily wounded, his life might have ended there if not for the shepherd Stefanos Psarras, also known as Loumbas, who nursed him back to health. Years later, when Loumbas was accused of rebellion against the Ottomans for attempting to rebuild an ancient church in Filoti, he was rewarded for his loving care in the most unexpected way – a twist of fate so unlikely and miraculous that it remained in the memory of the Naxian people for centuries, cherished and retold as the legend of ‘Kane to kalo kai richtho sto giallo’. Come and experience the miracle yourself in the legend of Loumbas and his son Giorgis.
Difficulty: Low to medium, running along official hiking path No. 2 to Aria springs
Duration: 75 min., return from Aria spring needs to be organised by private pickup, taxi or return via the hiking path
The hike begins in Filoti, then takes you outside the village (after scene 3, about 15 minutes in) to the entrance of official Naxos hiking path No. 2 here. You may consider driving this part of the hike (ca. 15-20 min. on foot, 5 minutes in the car), and either parking your car there or arranging for the driver to continue to the end of the hike at the Arion spring. It is a pleasant place to wait in the solitude of the mountains with occasional eagles circling overhead, where you can rejoin ca. 30 minutes later.
You can also continue from here to the Zas cave, about 25 minutes further up the mountain.
This is one of the oldest and most venerable paths of Naxos, therefore also designated the official hiking path No.2, leading to the Zas cave with archaeological remains traced back to 4000 BC. Around halfway into the path, there is a small path branching off to the right, so to be sure, follow the red paint marks and arrows marking the official hiking path. You can open all gates, just make sure to close them behind you.
